Lawyers prepare for annual spike in enquiries this January ‘Divorce Day’

A law firm with offices in Chesterfield, Sheffield, Mansfield and Dronfield which has a specialist family law department is preparing for the annual spike in enquiries this January about separation or divorce, after the Christmas break.

Like many firms across the region, Banner Jones’ family team says it is bracing itself for its busiest period of the year, with Monday the 8th of January – the first working Monday of the year – informally dubbed, ‘Divorce Day’.

According to Gov UK, there were 28,865 divorce filings between January and March 2023, a 19% increase from October to December 2022.

Amongst those looking for legal advice Banner Jones’ Head of Family Law, Kelly Parks explains that “Many couples already know they will be separating but often stay together for Christmas if they have children or don’t want to ‘spoil christmas’ for the family. The New Year also makes people reflect and want change. And the pressure that Christmas brings of financial pressure, an intense period of time together often with extended family, office parties and infidelity, can often be the final straw for marriages that are already struggling”.

She added: “Sadly, ‘divorce day’ isn’t a myth and shows a repeating pattern each year.

“This year not only are there pressures from the festive period, but the cost-of-living is playing a role in divorces, and the added financial pressures can have a negative impact on relationships”.
